The city of Canale: vineyards with historic roots

Among the Roero hills rises Canale, founded in 1260 ex novo by Asti, on the territories of some of the episcopal feudal lords. The trade and production of wine in the Roero dates back to the 7th century BC. and proceeds under the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, wine production expanded and developed, consolidating during the seventeenth century, with the arrival of the Savoy. After a turbulent beginning of the twentieth century, which undermined the basis of viticulture, today Canale dedicates ample space to agriculture based on the vine. In particular on the Arneis vine, origin of the renowned Roero Arneis DOCG white wine, an excellent wine produced by the Filippo Gallino farm.

The Roero hills host numerous vineyards, on soils of mostly marine origin, typically clayey, permeable and rich in mineral salts. The Piedmontese town, having only temporary water reserves, maintains the magnificent vineyard landscape thanks to the use of cisterns for collecting rainwater and wells to reach the aquifers. Thanks to its slopes and exposure, the city of Canale hosts almost 400 hectares of thriving wine production.
